University of California system will no longer consider SAT, ACT scores for admissions

(Article by Ivan Pentchoukov republished from TheEpochTimes.com) The change is the result of a legal settlement (pdf) of a lawsuit brought by groups that claimed that the traditional SAT and ACT tests are racist. Under the settlement, the university, which enrolls some 225,000 undergraduate students, said it won’t consider SAT or ACT scores sent along with admissions applications until 2025. The university further stated that it had no current plan to consider the scores after 2025. The settlement specifies that the university can still use SAT and ACT scores to determine course placement after the students are accepted. But the nine campuses will no longer use the test scores to determine how to award scholarships.

The University of California System Will No Longer Require SAT/ACT Scores After Test Biases Called Out by Students

The University of California System Will No Longer Require SAT/ACT Scores After Test Biases Called Out by Students The University of California has agreed to no longer take SAT and ACT test scores into consideration from school and scholarship applicants in a massive win for minority students and those with disabilities. The ruling, which was announced on Friday, May 14, signals the end of a drawn-out court battle between the University of California system and students over whether considering scores from the tests put students with disabilities and those from low-income families at a disadvantage when applying to the system’s universities.

We aren t getting rid of SATs because they don t work

Tweet As Jazz pointed out yesterday morning, the UC system in California has decided that it will no longer consider SAT or ACT scores in either admission or scholarship decisions. The reasons for this move weren’t hard to discern: “Today’s settlement ensures that the university will not revert to its planned use of the SAT and ACT which its own regents have admitted are racist metrics,” said Amanda Mangaser Savage, a lawyer representing the students… The settlement resolves a 2019 lawsuit brought by a coalition of students, advocacy groups and the Compton Unified School District, a largely Black and Hispanic district in Los Angeles County. The plaintiffs said that the college entrance tests are biased against poor and mainly Black and Hispanic students and that by basing admissions decisions on those tests, the system illegally discriminates against applicants on the basis of their race, wealth and disability.
