Holiday crime was down in Mesquite last year
City officials also reported an overall drop in crime for 2020.

Overall crime for the year also fell slightly in 2020 compared to the previous year, down about 9% from 2019 crime levels.
But December saw major dips: Burglaries were down 52% from the previous year and reports of shoplifting fell 26%. Vehicle thefts dropped by 21% and thefts from buildings by 39%.
“We are doing better in many areas,” City Manager Cliff Keheley said. “Our police department has expanded their efforts in a lot of different ways to address criminal activity in our community. But, we will continue to find ways to do better.”

Yolanda Shepard is the first Black woman to ever serve on the Mesquite commission that oversees appeals for personnel matters for the city, police and fire departments.
Mesquite City Council voted unanimously to appoint Shepard to the Civil Service Commission and Personnel/Trial Board last week and she was sworn in on Monday.
