Apr 10, 2021 Richard L. Hessert, 87, of Rumson, New Jersey, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on the morning of March 30, 2021 after a lengthy battle with dementia and later, COVID. Dick was born in DuBoistown on September 29, 1933 to father George L. Hessert Sr. and mother Elizabeth (Denius) Hessert-Heilman. The youngest of three sons, Dick graduated from South Williamsport High School, where he played all-state football. He was drafted into the U.S. Army after graduation and was stationed in Berlin, Germany during the Korean War as a combat engineer. His job was to wire bridges between East and West Berlin with explosives to curtail the Soviets. Upon exiting the military, Dick attended Lycoming College, graduating with a degree in mathematics. Soon after, Dick was hired at Geisinger Medical Center to set up one of the first dialysis labs in the country. Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat, and Peter Meijer, a Republican, introduced a bill Thursday that removes a key barrier to health benefits for veterans exposed to toxic fumes while serving overseas. It is the seventh piece of legislation introduced in Congress in recent weeks designed to help veterans who were exposed to fumes from burn pits while serving on military installations. On both sides of the political aisle, lawmakers in Washington are ramping up efforts to expand care for veterans who became sick after breathing the toxic fumes. And the litany of bills illustrate the growing appetite in Congress to address the issue, especially with President Joe Biden believing his son died from toxic exposure.

Apr 7, 2021 CANFIELD Margaret A. “Peggy” Holzbach, 76, was born on Christmas Day 1944 and passed away on Good Friday, April 2, 2021. Peggy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She always had a smile that could brighten your day along with her loving and caring nature. She was born in Meridian, Miss., the daughter of William and Lois Carol Kennedy, and moved to the Youngstown area in the early 1960s. She attended Seton Hill University, earning her bachelor’s degree in literature and French. Peggy taught French at Liberty and Canfield High Schools, leading students on study abroad trips to France. She was an expert antique dealer, appraiser and collector, but her most important roles were homemaker and matriarch for her family.
