Join us as we celebrate Military Appreciation Month and Armed Services Day

Join us as we celebrate Military Appreciation Month and Armed Services Day May is a significant month for the military in terms of scheduled observances. And the military, through the operations at Travis Air Force Base, is an integral part of the local community. The base in Fairfield had a total economic impact in the 2016 federal fiscal year of $1.65 billion. It’s the latest economic impact study from the base and covers the time period of Oct. 1, 2015, through Sept. 30, 2016. Base operations have expanded since then, to include work to prepare Travis for the new KC-46 Pegasus refueling aircraft. Nearly half of those who work at the base live off base and as such are members of the local communities.

Army nurse reflects on her 42-year career

Fox Army Health Center Deputy to the Commander for Quality and Safety Dr. Margaret Bates credits her 42-year nursing career with those who contributed to her professional development, with one of them being her older cousin, who inspired her to become a nurse. “Everything she said and did flowed from her warm and caring personality,” Bates said. “I knew I wanted to be just like her and do the same type of work.” Bates started her career in the mid-1970s working at M.D. Anderson Cancer Institute & Hospital as a graduate nurse. While waiting on her board results, Bates had the opportunity to give chemotherapy treatment to a patient. She recalled the paralyzing fear of making an error in that moment but credits the staff and patients of M.D. Anderson for laying the foundation of her nursing career.
