Once wounded: now a warrior giving back

Wounded Warriors run delayed to April in hopes of in-person event

The event involves a team of eight runners in a relay-style run along the length of Vancouver Island. It takes the runners eight consecutive days to cover more than 700 kilometres. The group, which hopes to raise $250,000 for its programs, has convinced provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry to join the team for the final leg of the journey through downtown Victoria and speak at the finale if the event goes ahead in April. “It is disappointing to postpone the run, but we know that the mission doesn’t change. We are still working every day to raise funds for our veterans, first responders and their families to access life-changing programs through Wounded Warriors Canada,” said run director Jacqueline Zweng in a statement. “We know this need is also greater than ever, given the circumstances of the past year since our last run in 2020, which was literally a week before the pandemic shut things down in Canada.”

THE CANADIAN PRESS/HO-Angela Gevaudan February 07, 2021 - 3:00 AM OTTAWA - Angela Gevaudan recalls the first year after her RCMP-officer husband was killed on duty as a whirlwind of responsibility and emotion that offered her little time to process her grief and loss. Const. Fabrice Gevaudan was one of three Mounties shot and killed during a gunman’s rampage in Moncton, N.B., in June 2014. In the aftermath, investigations and reviews were launched, memorial services were held and life-size statues commissioned.
