The five defendants were charged last month following a two-year investigation which was led by members of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. This morning, Detective Chief Superintendent Walter O Sullivan of GNBCI gave evidence at Limerick District Court of formally arresting and charging all five at Mayorstone garda station in the city on April 29. None, he said, made any reply to charges which are contrary to common law.

The five are to be charged with perverting the course of justice following an investigation by the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The Garda Commissioner suspended 11 members of the force because of the investigation, one subsequently retired. Two others, a garda and a civilian, have been charged and are currently before the courts. The Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation first suspected in early 2019 that information had been disclosed about a Criminal Assets Bureau investigation into the activities of a criminal gang in Munster.

  Five people, including four serving Garda members, are set to face charges in the courts arising from a lengthy Garda investigation into allegations centred on perverting the course of the justice system. All five appeared by appointment separately at a Garda station on Thursday to be arrested and charged. “As part of an investigation led by the Assistant Commissioner, Organised and Serious Crime (OSC) into alleged corruption in public office, four members of An Garda Síochána based in the south of the country and a private citizen were arrested and charged today with offences relating to perverting the course of justice,” a Garda spokesman said.
