ELIZABETHTON â The Carter County Health Department administered the first vaccinations with the Moderna vaccine for COVID-19 on Monday, providing shots to several first responders.
âThis is another weapon in our arsenal to defeat the pandemic,â Caroline Hurt, director of the Carter County and Johnson County Health departments, said. The Tennessee Department of Health had announced last week that the Moderna vaccines would be shipped to the county health departments this week, and Hurt knew the vaccines would be coming to the Washington, Unicoi and Carter health departments on Monday.
âWe received our shipment about 10:45 a.m.,â Hurt said.
Hurt wasted no time in puttingthe vaccines to work. Several top priority candidates were assembled in the Truman Clark Annex of the Carter County Health Department. Hurt said those included Elizabethton Police Chief Jason Shaw, some firefighters from the Elizabethton Fire Department, some members of the Carter County Resc
ELIZABETHTON â The economics of a pandemic dominated discussions in Monday nightâs meeting of the Carter County Commissionâs Budget Committee.
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was a factor in several different budget discussions during the meeting, from preparing for the unknown costs involved in setting up a vaccination point in the county to discussions about sick leave for county employees who are quarantined or required to stay at home to care for a sick family member.
Although the negotiations have not yet been accomplished, it appears the county may be setting up a vaccination point on the Matheson Property on U.S. Highway 19E on the east side of Elizabethton. The vacant industrial property was formerly the site of an Alcoa aluminum extrusion facility.
