Pixar’s “Soul” continued its awards season dominance on Friday by winning seven Annie Awards, including feature. The jazzy look at the before-life also won for music (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste), writing (Pete Docter. Mike Jones and Kemp Powers), character animation (Michal Makarewicz), FX (Tolga Göktekin, Carl Kaphan, Hiroaki Narita, Enrique Vila and Kylie Wijsmuller), storyboarding (Trevor Jimenez) and editorial (Kevin Nolting, Gregory Amundson, Robert Grahamjones, Amera Rizk).
“Wolfwalkers,” from Irish studio Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Prods. for Apple and GKIDS, took home five Annies, including independent feature. Wolfwalkers were the big winners at the 48th annual Annie Awards for animation, which were doled out in a virtual ceremony tonight. Cartoon Network Studios Launches First Dedicated Shorts Program In Over A Decade
Cartoon Network Studios (CNS) is stepping up its commitment to short films. The studio has unveiled Cartoon Cartoons, a rebooted shorts program that will aim to “innovate the art of animated storytelling, showcase diverse stories, discover new voices, and mentor the next generation of animators.”
Shorts produced within the program will vary in length, target audience (spanning preschoolers to adults), and subject matter, ranging from character-driven and comedic narratives to experimental animation. Artists and producers “of all experience levels” will be able to participate, whether or not they are based at CNS, and the films will potentially be distributed on Cartoon Network, streaming platform HBO Max, or other Warnermedia platforms.
