Meet the 2021 Dover Foundation Scholars Every year since 1968 the Dover Foundation has given scholarships to local students to help curb the rising cost of a secondary education. This year was no different, with the foundation giving $150,000 worth of scholarships to 11 Cleveland County students. The foundation hosted its annual scholarship awards event last week at the Le Grand Center to recognize those students. “The Dover Foundation is pleased to encourage these exceptionally talented students by playing a small part in their academic journeys. Hearing about their plans encourages me and gives me hope for a bright future”, said Kathy Wilson, president of the Dover Foundation.

COVID-19 Vaccine Will Be Optional For Most College Students In Charlotte

/ As part of the UNC System, Western Carolina University in Cullowhee will not require students not to receive a COVID-19 vaccination before returning to classes in the 2021 fall semester. Most students who attend colleges and universities in the Charlotte area will not be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 when they return to class this fall. A Queens University News Service survey of 13 North Carolina colleges and universities within 65 miles of Charlotte found that at least six of the institutions will not require a vaccination. Among the six that will not have a vaccination requirement are two with the largest enrollments: UNC Charlotte, with 30,146 students and Central Piedmont Community College, with roughly 43,000 students.

Cooper reappointed to WCU Board of Trustees - The Cherokee One Feather

Cooper reappointed to WCU Board of Trustees   CULLOWHEE – The University of North Carolina Board of Governors appointed Timothy “Jake” Robinson of Canton, to the Western Carolina University Board of Trustees, while also reappointing current board members, Robert “Bob” Roberts of Asheville, Haden Boliek of Fayetteville, and Casey Cooper of Cherokee at its meeting Thursday, April 22. The board appointments will take effect July 1 through June 30, 2025. Cooper is the chief executive officer of Cherokee Indian Hospital in Cherokee. The hospital serves approximately 14,000 members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). As an enrolled member of the EBCI, Cooper has been involved in American Indian health care for 25 years. He is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University and holds a master’s degree in business from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Hamilton County Schools Announce New Principals Thursday, April 22, 2021 Dr. Sarah Lane As the district looks to the 2021-2022 school year, Hamilton County Schools announced several personnel updates Thursday, including new principals.  Crystal Sorrells has been named the principal at Brainerd High School. She previously served as principal of East Ridge High School and was named 2021 Principal of the Year for Hamilton County Schools.  Ms. Sorrells, a Brainerd High School graduate, has been an educator for 22 years and is the daughter of two longtime HCS educators. She first joined Hamilton County Schools in 2009 as assistant principal at Brainerd High School. Since then, she’s served as principal at Orchard Knob Middle, Tyner Middle Academy and East Ridge High School. Ms. Sorrells is a High School Mentor Principal for the Missionary Ridge Learning Community and graduated with the first cohort from the Principal Leadership Academy sponsored by Hamilton County Schools
