New solar facility provides clean energy to Apple’s Nevada data center, located in the Reno Technology Park
McCarthy Building Companies’ Renewable Energy & Storage group recently completed construction of the Turquoise Solar Project in Washoe County, Nevada. The new 61 MWdc solar farm is located on approximately 180 acres in the Reno Technology Park a 2,200-acre master planned industrial park shared between Apple and Turquoise Solar, who own approximately 1,600 and 600 acres, respectively.
Within the Park, the Turquoise Solar Project is owned by Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company (“GREC”), a utility-scale renewable energy development company. McCarthy Building Companies has been selected by Lightsource bp as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for two utility-scale solar farms in Ellis and Navarro counties.
McCarthy is responsible for the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the facilities: the 163-megawatt Elm Branch Solar Farm located in Ennis and the 153-megawatt Briar Creek Solar Farm located in Corsicana.
Construction of the two projects recently began and is slated to be complete in September, with commercial operations of both solar farms expected by late 2021. The energy produced will offset greenhouse gas emissions by a total of 370,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

Construction has started with commercial operation of both projects expected by late 2021. McCarthy Building Companies was selected by Lightsource bp as their Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Contractor for the project. The McCarthy team was selected for both their track record in successfully building large-scale solar projects and their commitment to recruiting and hiring from the local workforce.
