Fort Worth to Dim Skyline to Save Migrating Birds

Updated on March 19, 2021 at 5:56 pm Getty Images The City of Fort Worth will be taking part in the national Lights Out campaign and will be dimming its skyline every night from midnight to 6 a.m. through May 31 to help save migrating birds who may otherwise get lost or crash into buildings. The goal of Lights Out is to help protect billions of birds as they migrate throughout the United States. The migration primarily occurs at night which is when the lights from buildings shine the brightest and can post a dangerous distraction for transitory birds. It seems to me that there are fewer birds around compared to a decade ago, and I ve particularly noticed it this year. Is this just my imagination, or have there been some significant changes? On the other hand, the number of squirrels that show up to pick up bits of bird feed that fall to the ground has not changed at all. Their population always seems quite high. Is there any information on the density of squirrels per square mile within our urban areas?

This may be because getting to it usually involves, once you’ve come off Freeway 3, driving for well over hour on narrow, twisting roads into the uplands of Chiayi County’s Meishan Township (梅山). Faced with a long drive and an unfamiliar path, I did the sensible thing and asked a friend, Richard Foster, to join me. I knew Richard would neither keep me waiting nor force me to move at a faster pace than I’m comfortable with. It was his first time to Jhukeng River Trail, too.
