Petition asks Riverdale Ave. traffic issues be addressed January 11, 2021 Reading time: 1 min Seaway News stock image of a stop sign. CORNWALL, Ontario – A petition from the Riverdale Safety Association has been sent to Cornwall City Council asking that raises specific issues they feel need to be addressed. The petition states that both speed and volume of traffic on Riverdale Ave. has become a problem. “With recent and ongoing development in the north end of Riverdale, there has been a significant increase of traffic volume and speeds,” the petition reads. “Moreover, the constant truck traffic servicing the new Parkwood estates subdivision is a clear contravention of posted vehicle restrictions. These large trucks and flatbeds not only add to the congestion at the intersection of Riverdale Ave. and Grant Ave., but also generate enough vibrations to shake the house foundations on Grant, Riverdale, and adjoining side

City seeks public input on organic waste

City seeks public input on organic waste December 28, 2020 at 12 h 04 min Reading time: 2 min By Nick Seebruch CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall will be holding a virtual chat on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. to discuss organic waste collection. The goal of an organic waste collection initiative would not only be to harness organic waste as a resource, but also to divert it from the city’s landfill, thereby extending its life. At the beginning of 2020, Cornwall City Council received a presentation detailing that there were only about 12 years left in the current landfill’s life cycle, and that the cost to close and maintain the site alone would be roughly $38 million, and that is without even considering the expense of opening a new landfill.

The year that was 2020

The year that was 2020 December 28, 2020 Reading time: 4 min By Nick Seebruch 2021 is just around the corner, but before it is here, I want to take a minute to look back on the year that was. For the past 12 months, I’ve heard 2020 cursed again and again as a year that has been terrible for everyone. This year has been challenging for sure. Everyone worldwide has had to endure the COVID-19 pandemic and the changes it has forced on our society and economy. There were very few occasions this year where I would write a story that didn’t mention COVID-19 at some point. What I want to highlight the successes that we have seen in our region over the past year, despite the adversity of the pandemic.

Cornwall Mayor reflects on 2020 and beyond December 27, 2020 Reading time: 3 min 30 s By Nick Seebruch Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement. CORNWALL, Ontario – In a year dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement sat down with Seaway News to talk about the notable events of 2020, and a few things she expects for 2021. “The highlights for me have been how resilient we have been as a community,” said Clement, referring to the response of different parts of the community to the pandemic. Clement pointed out that Cornwall had experience with the pandemic before much of the rest of the province. In February, Cornwall hosted Canadian passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, who were being quarantined at the Nav Centre after possibly being exposed to COVID-19.

Santa is an essential service

Santa is an essential service December 16, 2020 Reading time: 1 min 30 s Seaway News Staff CORNWALL, Ontario – At their meeting on Monday night, Cornwall City Council passed a motion ensuring that Santa Claus will still be able to visit all of the girls and boys this year, despite COVID-19 restrictions. Whereas boughs of holly, jingle bells, cups of cheer, mistletoe, candy canes, pine trees, eggnog, twinkling lights and other elements of the Christmas cornucopia will provide some Yuletide joy as we face the coming winter, but they will, alas, come up short without the magic of Santa. Whereas, with other countries like Trinidad and Tobago, Ireland, Belgium and Australia already taking steps to exempt Santa from COVID-19 related restrictions, governments in Canada should similarly take action to assure Canadian children that, despite the current pandemic, Santa will still be able to visit Canadian homes and make spirits bright.
