Congress Set to Discuss Maritime Decarbonization Tuesday, April 13, 2021
Lawmakers have scheduled their first oversight hearing on the issue of decarbonization in the maritime industry. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Transportation is slated to meet on Thursday, 15 April, in a hearing titled Practical Steps Toward a Carbon-Free Maritime Industry: Updates on Fuels, Ports, and Technology.
The hearing is one of the first congressional actions that narrowly focuses on the maritime industry, which is projected to be a busy 117th Congress for climate, sustainability, and decarbonization activity. President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have both cited climate issues among their top priorities and have called for a zero-carbon economy by 2050. KR launches online EEXI/CII calculation program
The Korean Register (KR) has developed a web-based EEXI/CII calculation program to help shipping companies comply with the Energy Efficiency Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity (CII) decarbonization regulations which will come into effect in 2023. The program uses KR’s extensive software development experience and offers a simple way to calculate each vessels compliance using basic key information.
The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 75th MEPC meeting announced the enforcement of more stringent decarbonisation regulations. Among them, the assignment of the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) which will be applied to existing ships from 2023, creating a significant challenge for the maritime industry.
