Firefighters are warning residents to avoid the area and say they are likely to be tackling a blaze at a Cumbrian airfield for some time.
Crews have been tackling the fire at Silloth Airfield throughout the night and are still at the scene.
A spokesman for Carlisle East Fire Station said: “Carlisle Eastâs crew have been at this incident throughout the night, and are still in attendance.
“The incident is likely to be protracted and ongoing for some time, so please avoid the area.”
The incident happened at 3.30am today, prompting an emergency response that involved police, fire and ambulance crews. A spokesman for Carlisle East Fire Station said crews from the station and colleagues from Carlisle West were called out to the C1014 between Durdar and Dalston. They found a Land Rover Discovery in a roadside ditch, engulfed by fire. Fortunately, having extinguished the blaze using two hosereels and breathing apparatus, it was discovered that there was nobody trapped in the vehicle, said a statement. The car s occupants had left the scene. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
