The hot chicken sandwich In April last year, when the pandemic was already looking ferocious, the owners of the new Yellow Light Coffee & Donuts rolled the dice and opened at 14447 E. Jefferson Ave. in the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood on Detroit s east side. Thankfully, it has a drive-thru. The dining area has yet to open. The joint is a creation of Green Dot Stables and Johnny Noodle King co-owners Jacques and Christine Driscoll, along with Niko Dimitrijevic. At first, because of Covid, they just served bags of coffee to-go. Shortly after, they opend for limited hours for coffee and bean orders and made donuts on the weekend. Some of the out-of-the-orindary donuts include brown butter plaintain, mint chocolate chip, hibiscus lime and cherry almond.

Then we had a couple slices and changed our mind, quickly discovering it was a contender. Now, two years later, Carlos Parisi is featuring the joint on Deadline TV s Detroit Digest. This place offers top-notch Mexican food, including lobster quesadillas, enchiladas verdes and other authentic dishes.  Chef Luis Garza recently added dinner trays that feed four for $50. You can t beat that, particularly if you don t want to cook for the holidays. They ll be open Thursday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Christmas Day from 1-9 p.m. Here s another reason to get carryout: Garza is donating 20 percent of his sales to the dining room employees he s had to lay off.
