A Population-Level Approach to Suicide Prevention

Christine Moutier, MD The recent signing into law of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan aims to improve the financial security of millions of people with low and middle incomes in the US through extending unemployment benefits, providing direct payments, funding emergency paid leave, and several other measures. The epidemiologic literature connecting financial crises to elevated risk of suicidal behavior raises the possibility that by improving financial security at a population level, the new legislation might help reverse a 2-decades-long gradual national increase in suicide. Such a population-based perspective on suicide risk prevention complements the traditional individual-level perspective that has guided much of the research and clinical interventions on suicide prevention during the past half century. The individual-level perspective posits that the incidence of suicide attempts could be reduced through improved detection and intervention involving individual patients

Oklahoma Part Of Ongoing Moderna Adolescent Trial For COVID-19 Vaccine

By: Chinh Doan OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma is one of a few locations around the country that is a part of Moderna s adolescent trial for its COVID-19 vaccine. The year-long trial is focused on children 12 to 17 years old. The Lynn Health Science Institute, which has offices throughout the state, said about 2,5000 Oklahoma children wanted to enroll. In the end, there were slots for 320 kids, and they have reported the trial is going well so far. 13-year-old Pacey Brody is part of the trial. It s pretty cool to be a part of something like this because it s like something I get to do to help out other people, so it feels pretty good to be a part of it, said Pacey.
