Confusion persists over which COVID-19 rules, county or state, restaurants should follow

That’s what Mayor Jonathan Godes said during a Garfield County commissioners meeting Monday. However, there remains confusion for restaurants and other business sectors after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) last week imposed tighter restrictions, including suspending indoor dining, while the commissioners have said they can continue to operate at 50% indoor capacity, along with takeout services and open-air dining. County commissioners have scheduled a special meeting for 9 a.m. Wednesday to formally adopt a resolution put forth last week seeking to classify indoor dining, gyms and fitness centers as “critical businesses” exempt from the level red restrictions.

Garfield-16 sticks to in-person learning throughout fall semester

Throughout the entire course of the fall semester, the Garfield-16 school district has yet to switch any of its four schools in western Garfield County fully to online learning. “We did a really good job cohorting our students,” said district superintendent Brad Ray. “So, any positive tests or symptoms that impact a cohort, we’ve been able to minimize everything to the best of our abilities at this point in time.” Out of the district’s 1,100 students, Ray said they’ve only had to quarantine one classroom at Grand Valley Middle School in Battlement Mesa. In comparison, Roaring Fork School District Re-1 has 5,637 students; Garfield County Re-2, 4,700.

State says Garfield County move to deem restaurants, other sectors as critical under COVID-19 restrictions holds water

Garfield County is set to test the waters on whether restaurants and certain other business sectors can be deemed “essential,” allowing them to operate at greater capacity than the state’s COVID-19 dial says. County commissioners on Monday morning may review any changes to a resolution passed at a special Dec. 10 meeting categorizing restaurants, noncritical retail businesses, gyms and fitness centers as “critical.” The move would allow qualifying businesses to remain in operation at 50% capacity, even in light of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) moving the county to the red category on its COVID-19 dial last week.
