Though ranked high along with the European Union (EU) and the UK in the latest edition of the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) released by the non-profit Germanwatch, India needs to focus more on renewable energy, both, as a mitigation strategy and for its post-novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) green recovery according to the report. The current index analyzes emissions before the coronavirus crisis and does not reflect emissions reduction during this unusual situation.

Dec 15, 2020 WorldComments Off on India Increasingly Vulnerable to Climate Change: Report Finds NEW DELHI A first-of-its kind report at the district level in India on extreme climate events such as cyclones, floods and drought finds that “more than 75 percent of India’s 728 districts, home to over 638 million people, are hotspots for extreme climate events.” The report, “Preparing India for Extreme Climate Events,” by the Council of Energy, Environment and Water, an Asian nonprofit research institution, states that India experienced more than 478 extreme weather events between 1970 and 2019 most occurring since 2005. “Post-2005, at least 55 or more districts witnessed extreme flood events year-on-year, exposing 97.51 million people annually,” the report states in its key findings. “The year 2005 recorded the highest flood frequency, with 140 floods affecting 69 districts. The number of affected districts increased to 151 in 2019.”
