Higher minimum wage for South Africa was not a thumb suck : minister

Higher minimum wage for South Africa was not a ‘thumb suck’: minister Subscribe Employment and Labour minister Thulas Nxesi has reiterated that the adjustment of the National Minimum Wage rate was the outcome of an extensive consultation process. The minister on Monday made the comment in response to the outcry on the newly adjusted National Minimum Wage (NMW) rates. The department last week announced that the NMW increased to R21.69 per hour from R20.76 from March. The minimum wage is a tool to ensure that vulnerable workers do not fall below the poverty line and it is designed to reduce inequality and huge disparities in income in the national labour market.

Bolstering SA s Healthcare System One Nurse At A Time

iAfrica 2 months ago 3 min read Share with your network! The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that a country with fewer than 23 doctors per 10 000 citizens would be insufficient to achieve coverage of primary healthcare needs 1. However, WHO’s latest data reveals that South Africa has 9 medical doctors per 10 000 citizens 2. To deal with this shortage, it is crucial to empower nurses and introduce increased para-skilling within the healthcare system.  According to Rhulani Nhlaniki, Country Manager at Pfizer South Africa, it is for this reason that Pfizer joined forces with Unjani Clinics – a network of clinics that provide quality, affordable and accessible primary healthcare to underserved communities in South Africa. This is done via a three-pronged approach:

Looking at your money with 2020 hindsight

Retrenchment According to StatsSA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey, more than two million South Africans lost their jobs in the second quarter of 2020 – during the height of Covid-19 lockdowns. When companies are faced with budget cuts, they often opt to cut independent contractors and freelancers before looking to retrench permanent staff. As a freelancer, I was effectively “retrenched” twice in the space of a year.  What did we learn?  While it may yet be early days and many are still trying to patch their finances together, we may see an uptick in the number of retrenchment insurance policies being taken up in years to come. Old Mutual reported paying out R10-million in retrenchment cover in 2019 and one can only surmise that this figure would have increased in 2020.
