Extension offers winter programs

POMEROY 2020 was an odd year, to say the least. 2021 is even starting on a rainy note too. While many activities stopped, evolved, or got pushed back, our agricultural community has continued to work. Animals need cared for, crops need planted, treated, and harvested, timber needs to be harvested, inspected, and delivered for processing, raw ingredients need packaged for delivery to restaurants (even if they are take-out only) and grocery store shelves need stocked. The bottom line is that our food, fiber, timber, and related industries have been working overtime to keep America moving!
To help those industries keep providing everything from fresh fruit to chicken tenders to plywood and (GASP) toilet paper, OSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Staff have been working to provide support. In January alone, more than 50 classes are listed on the OSU Extension ANR Calendar. Topics range from Dairy Labor Management to Farm Bill

Kerala is on the course of becoming the fifth state to bypass the three farm laws that the Narendra Modi government brought earlier this year. A special assembly session will be held on December 31, when a resolution to not implement the three farm laws is likely to get the nod of the Kerala legislature.
It has been over a month since protest came to the Delhi border points with thousands of farmers demanding a complete rollback of the farm laws passed by Parliament in the Monsoon Session. The protests against the farm laws picked up momentum from Punjab, which led the legislative process to oppose the central laws.

There are roughly 10 million dairy (breed) milk cows in the U.S. Dairy Herd. The bull calves born from this dairy herd make-up a significant portion of the animals slaughtered for beef each year. Over the last several years, the idea of breeding dairy breed cows with beef breed bulls has gained momentum, and is known as “Beef on Dairy.”
“It is estimated that by the end of December 2020, nearly two million beef on dairy calves will have been born for the year,” said Bill Tom, Executive Vice President for Livestock Marketing at United Producers, Inc. “This is an increase over the 2019 numbers. Estimates are that just under three million beef on dairy calves will be born in 2021, and that number could increase to between five and six million beef on dairy calves born annually by 2025.”

Panic buying has slowed down considerably since this spring, but one thing still lingering is higher demand for meat that s easier for people to cook themselves.
Listen / Ground beef, hamburger, to some degree roasts - things people know how to prepare at home and are, you know, pretty comfortable with, said Chelsea Good of the Livestock Marketing Association.
That s not as true for higher-end cuts of beef. With more of those on the market, Good said that translates into lower costs and some discounts at grocery stores. But actually getting the meat to the store is still a bit of an issue - especially for some of those nicer, local cuts.
CII Jharkhand welcomes new farm laws, lauds Centre for pushing reforms ‘There’ll be more avenues to sell produce at better prices and at reduced transportation costs’
Jharkhand State Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has come out in support of the three farm laws, welcoming the Union government’s decision to push for agri marketing reforms. The reforms are aimed towards moving to a ‘One Nation, One Market’ regime. The reforms were announced under the economic package for building Atmanirbhar Bharat and the quick action in terms of approval by the Union cabinet is commendable, Sanjay Sabherwal, chairman, CII Jharkhand, said here on Thursday.
