NACOGDOCHES, Texas Stephen F. Austin State University and the athletics department made a bold statement for its future with the official announcement this week that it will join the Western Athletic Conference for the 2021-2022 academic year and beyond.
SFA will be joined by three other departing Southland Conference programs – Abilene Christian, Lamar and Sam Houston State as well as Southern Utah of the Big Sky Conference in assimilating to the WAC.
The expansion announcement was made Thursday inside NRG Center in Houston by contributing conference and university officials, including SFA president Dr. Scott Gordon and Director of Athletics Ryan Ivey.
Alabama State to host Miles College in 2021 Labor Day Classic

The Alabama State Hornets will play the Miles College Golden Bears in the 2021 Labor Day Classic, the school announced on Thursday.
Alabama State will host Miles College at ASU Stadium in Montgomery, Ala., on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021. The game will mark the 26th overall meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.
Alabama State and Miles College first met on the gridiron in 1921. The Hornets defeated the Golden Bears in their most recent contest, 26-7 in the 2016 Turkey Day Classic, to extend their advantage in the series to 24-0-1.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - A source inside the Stephen F. Austin State University Athletic Department confirmed that the program would be part of a press conference in Houston on January 14 announcing their departure from the Southland Conference.
The announcement is expected to take place inside NRG Stadium. Other universities involved in the announcement will be Sam Houston State, Lamar and Abilene Christian.
