Tony Dungy and his wife Lauren exited a plane that had just landed in Tampa in January 1996 and enjoyed the 75-degree weather acting as the Welcome Wagon.
Dungy, the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, left frigid minus-14 degree wind chills to meet with Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer and general manager Rich McKay to discuss a vacant head-coaching job. Dungy had been passed over for head-coaching jobs in the past. When he had the NFL’s top defense in 1993, there were seven openings, and Dungy did not receive a call. In the following years, he had been interviewed by several teams but never got the job.
