HOUSTON – Galveston County health officials said they hope to begin offering coronavirus vaccine appointments again after the state designated two agencies in the county as vaccine hubs.
On Saturday, the state named UTMB Health Galveston and the Galveston County Health District as the hubs for the county.
Dr. Philip Keiser, the health authority for Galveston County, said officials are anticipating 5,000 doses to arrive in the county this week. He said preparations are underway to begin offering appointments whenever the shipment is received.
The Houston Health Department’s mass COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Minute Maid Park on Saturday was a success in that more than 6,000 area residents got their first dose of the potentially life-saving medicine. But logistical hiccups and a lack of on-site vetting allowed some Houstonians to skip the line and receive a shot without an appointment, and many residents who went through the correct process to make an appointment were sent away without getting a needle in the arm.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on Thursday that the city health department would once again administer coronavirus vaccines at Minute Maid on Saturday for folks who had already secured an appointment, and said he hoped to open up additional Saturday vaccine appointments if the city got enough additional doses.

According to officials, UTMB Health will be out of vaccines for first doses by Wednesday, Jan. 13. It is true that UTMB will not receive a vaccine shipment this week, read a statement issued by the hospital Monday evening. As previously stated, UTMB does not control the supplies and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. People who are scheduled to receive the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine will be able to do so through Tuesday [Jan. 12]. After that, we, unfortunately, will have to postpone previously scheduled first shots.
