GMIT apologises to students for comments made by tutors Apologies are being issued to GMIT students directly affected after tutors made personal comments about them following a virtual presentation. In a video being circulated online, one person is heard asking whether a student has something wrong with her. Galway Mayo Institute of Technology President Dr Orla Flynn has also apologised. Reporter with the Irish Independent, Gabija Gataveckaite, says some of the comments were very hurtful. For example during the lectures questioned whether one student had ADHD because  he s always hyper . They said one group of students were so painful to be listening to , and suggested that one female student had something wrong with her .

Irish lecturers overheard insulting students on video call

“I thought I’d have to get a drill and start drilling my teeth they were so painful, to be listening to him,” said one of the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology tutors in the west of Ireland. Her colleague had her own scathing verdict on the students. “I couldn’t take much more of them anyway, I was exhausted.” The unnamed lecturers apparently believed it was a private discussion and that the connection to the students had ended. In fact, some were still watching and at least one recorded the exchange. It was posted on social media, triggering widespread criticism of the lecturers and an apology from the college president, Orla Flynn.

College apologises after lecturers heard insulting students after online presentation

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) has apologised to students after lecturers were overheard insulting them online. Students were able to hear the lecturers allocate marks after an online presentation remained live. According to The Irish Examiner, one of the lecturers referred to a student as “that f king [student’s name]” and speculated there was “something wrong with” a female student. The other lecturer said she felt like “drilling [her] teeth” because one of the students was “so painful to be listening to”. A recording of the conversation, which is understood to have taken place last week, has been shared extensively on messaging applications such as Snapchat and WhatsApp.
