As the fight over demolition costs of an historic downtown building continues, the price for the owner is falling – slightly.
The City of Battle Creek is seeking payment from Bryant DeBolt for demolition costs of the Binder Building.
The 120-year-old, six-story sandstone tower at 34 W. Michigan Ave. was demolished in December after the city determined it might collapse and was a danger.
It was declared a nuisance and after a hearing, Calhoun County Circuit Court Judge Sarah Lincoln permitted the city to proceed with demolition.
The city is now seeking payment from DeBolt for the costs of removing the tower and making some repairs to the remaining structure, which DeBolt has owned since 1987 and is using it for storage.
BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) â A Calhoun County man who is accused of brutally killing a puppy in January has been ordered to stand trial.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reports the case involving 22-year-old Erik Paul Taylor of Athens was bound over to Calhoun County Circuit Court on Monday following a preliminary examination.
Taylor has been charged with killing his sister-in-lawâs 5-month-old puppy with a chainsaw on January 23rd.
The sister-in-law was among those who testified on Monday.
She earlier told the Battle Creek Enquirer that a different family member was supposed to watch the dog while her and her husband visited friends that day, but the family member ended up leaving the dog in Taylorâs care. Two weeks earlier, he apparently had made comments saying the dog was possessed and should be killed.
An 18-year-old Battle Creek youth has been ordered to stand trial in a shooting last year of another teenager.
The case against Tyshaan Williams of Battle Creek was sent to Calhoun County Circuit Court on Wednesday following a preliminary hearing before District Judge Michelle Richardson.
Williams is charged with assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
He faces a maximum prison sentence of up to life if convicted.
Williams was arrested after Battle Creek police said Damaunte Turner had been shot in the neck while riding his bicycle in the first block of Orchard Place about 3:20 p.m. on June 13.
