Michigan Gov. Whitmer orders flags to be lowered to honor Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon Regional leader died of complications related to COVID-19 Tags:  LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags on all public building grounds across the state to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday to honor the life of Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon. Napoleon died from complications of COVID-19 earlier this month. He was 65 years old. Public viewings were held on Monday and Tuesday, and a private funeral service will be held Wednesday morning. The former Detroit police chief and Wayne County sheriff died Thursday at 65. (FOX 2) - Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon has died from COVID-19. He was 65. Napoleon died Thursday night at Henry Ford Hospital surrounded by family. He was placed on a ventilator in late November and a prayer vigil was held in front of the Wayne County Sherrif s Office with family and friends rallying around him.
