As COVID-19 continues its deadly spread, Gaston County health officials provided at least a small ray of light in the gloom by saying last week s vaccination clinic far exceeded expectations.
Nearly 900 people received a COVID-19 vaccination Friday at the Gastonia Farmers Market as part of the first clinic open to the public.
The initial plan was to offer just 600 shots to men and women aged 75 and older, but Gaston County Health Director Steve Eaton said Friday appointments moved through the drive-up system faster than expected.
Eaton estimated Friday that most attendees received their shot within 20 minutes of their arrival.
Gaston County spokesman Adam Gaub said Gaston Emergency Medical Services personnel were also able to finish the day by vaccinating residents of a long term care facility in Mount Holly.
