Wyoming’s unemployment rate reached 8.5% last May but fell over the summer, reaching 5.4% in October, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Wyoming’s rate this past February was nearly 1 point lower than the U.S. average, 6.2%. Wyoming still had about 15,000 fewer jobs than it did a year earlier, however.

(AP) Police in a Wyoming city made almost 400 traffic stops over 14 hours in a federally funded effort to crack down on marijuana. The operation March 29-30 in Casper deployed 30 officers each day to the city s main roads and entry points, resulting in 389 stops for suspected traffic violations. “Essentially any car that they saw that had a traffic infraction take place, they pulled over,” Casper Police Department spokeswoman Rebekah Ladd said. Police gave motorists 269 warnings and 115 tickets. The tickets included 80 for speeding, 26 for other driving violations and nine for seat belt or child restraint violations, the Casper Star-Tribune reported.

(AP) The U.S. government and a railroad have reached a settlement agreement under which the company will pay $140,000 for spilling fuel and oil in a Wyoming river after a crash. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s announcement of the settlement Monday opened a 30-day period for people to comment on the agreement, the Casper Star-Tribune reported. Three BNSF Railway locomotives and five rail cars crashed into a train and derailed in eastern Wyoming s Wendover Canyon in 2019. The crash injured an engineer and conductor and released 5,900 gallons (22,000 liters) of diesel fuel and 800 gallons (3,000 liters) of lubricating oil into the North Platte River, according to the EPA.
