Remember those old Mac beats PC ads? The PC guy, down with a virus, sniffles miserably, while the Mac guy enjoys perfect health, because Macs don’t get viruses. Yeah, it wasn’t true then, and it’s
really not true now. Windows is certainly a bigger target, but we’re seeing more and more ransomware and other malware attacks directed specifically against Macs. That story about Macs not needing protection against viruses is just a fairy tale.
Admittedly, debunking that fairy tale took a while, so the market for Mac antivirus started off tiny. As the need became apparent, existing security companies found they could add Mac antivirus products to their line without risking the whole company if the demand didn’t pan out. Some Mac-only products did succeed, but most of the Mac antivirus products out there come from companies that own a big chunk of the Windows antivirus market, like Bitdefender and Norton.
The old adage goes that Macs can’t get viruses, so why would you bother downloading, let alone paying for, antivirus software? We have a few reasons.
No computer is immune from cyberattacks, so each year Which? tests Mac antivirus software to their limits with hundreds of virus attacks including worms and ransomware to see how they fare. Read on to see your protection options.
Built-in Mac security
While the adage mentioned above isn’t strictly true, it is fair to say that there aren’t many viruses for Mac computers, which makes them hard to come by. Our lab tests Windows antivirus software with several thousand Windows-specific viruses each year, but tests only a few dozen on Mac computers. That isn’t to say that it’s impossible to catch a Mac virus, but the number of different strains is much smaller.

Stalkerware – secret surveillance software used in the field of domestic violence – remains a significant problem.
According to a new Kaspersky report, a total of 53 870 mobile users were affected globally by stalkerware in 2020.
The recent Kaspersky report, “The State of Stalkerware 2020”, shows that the situation has not much improved compared to the year before – in 2019, it discovered 67 500 affected mobile users.
At the same time, when talking about improvements, it is important to take the start of the pandemic into account as stalkerware is often used to digitally control the life of an intimate partner.
With this in mind, it is unsurprising that the yearly curve of users affected by stalkerware globally shows a decline in reports from March to June 2020, before numbers began to stabilise thereafter. This coincides with the beginning of worldwide lockdowns, and later when many countries around the world began to ease restrictions.
