Arizona is experiencing a third COVID-19 surge, ASU expert says

Arizona is in another surge of COVID-19, a leading Arizona State University disease expert said Wednesday. The ongoing major wave of COVID-19 cases in Arizona most likely will look different from the previous surges that the state experienced, said Dr. Joshua LaBaer, executive director of the Biodesign Institute at ASU. We are in a surge, he said. We can t say that this surge will behave like all the other surges because there s just so much different about this one. . All the previous surges that we observed were in a population that was largely unvaccinated. Most significantly, there probably will be fewer hospitalizations and fewer deaths than the first two waves of COVID-19 in Arizona because so many people have been vaccinated, he told reporters during a virtual briefing.

Data: Arizona COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations are up

View Comments Arizona health officials say there is, definitely an uptick in COVID-19 cases across the state, likely due to the highly contagious delta variant. Both vaccinated and unvaccinated Arizonans should care about the increase in cases because more transmission of the virus raises the likelihood of so-called breakthrough cases, Dr. Cara Christ, the Arizona Department of Health Services director, said this week. A breakthrough case occurs when someone becomes infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, or new coronavirus, that causes COVID-19, even though vaccinated. Such cases are rare, but they do happen. As of Monday, Arizona had recorded 3,540 breakthrough COVID-19 cases out of more than 3.2 million fully vaccinated people, Steve Elliott, a state health department spokesperson, wrote in an email. Twenty-eight of those vaccinated people are known to have died from COVID-19, Elliott said.
