Woodcrest Public School shifted to virtual learning as more COVID-19 cases reported at Thunder Bay schools

Four Thunder Bay schools will be closed for in-person learning this week, with COVID-19 cases having been associated with a handful of other schools.

More city schools now have cases of COVID-19 to report and two school are moving to virtual learning.
Lakehead Public Schools reports there are three positive cases reported at St. James Public School.
The board reports the Thunder Bay District Health Unit says there is no evidence the virus has spread in the school setting and it is not considered an outbreak.
The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board tells us there is also an individual at Corpus Christi School that has tested positive for COVID-19.
The cohort at the school will remain home.
In addition the Catholic board indicates there is a second COVID-19 case at Pope John Paul II Senior Elementary School.
Keene said rising case numbers within the community also factored into the decision to have those two schools operate virtually.
The board consulted with Thunder Bay District medical officer of health Dr. Janet DeMille, Keene added, who supported shifting those schools to virtual learning but indicated it wasn t necessary to do that for all schools.
Keene said the transition to virtual learning for Westgate is relatively easy because high schools are already operating online for half the day. He said Monday is being spent as a transition day for Kingsway, as students and staff prepare to operate virtually.
