Kingsbury Green Power 10 students Students at Calne’s Kingsbury Green Academy are training to be the leaders of the future, thanks to a programme developed by the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust. Year 9 students at Kingsbury Green Academy who want to learn leadership skills are invited to apply for a place on the school’s Power of 10 programme, in which they learn to coach primary school pupils in sports such as netball, and help organise tournaments, festivals and fixtures. Scott Ferguson, Head of Physical Education and Sports Science said that the most promising students are normally selected to join the programme, which includes hosting all the local primary schools in sports tournaments.
The team spent four days together climbing the Brecon Beacons. Sidney Owen, 18, who is hoping to study Sports Exercise and Science after completing his A-levels, said: “The walking, the social contact, is all great. It’s quite tough, but it feels good to know you can get through it. It can sound daunting – some of us from the school went out to the wilds of Norway some years ago and walked eight hours every day – but I get a lot back from it.” Tom Farroll, 18, hopes to take a degree in quantity surveying once he has completed his A-levels. “I’ve found that it really stands out in interviews – people ask a lot about it if it’s on your CV, because it’s a bit unusual,” said Tom.

Kingsbury Green Academy students are challenging themselves in the highest category of Duke of Edinburgh Award this summer, and say the value of the legacy left by the Queen’s late consort is immense. Around 100 students at Calne-based Kingsbury Green Academy, which is part of the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust, take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards each year. Despite the pandemic restrictions, the thirteen Year 13 students who are taking part in the Gold Awards have already managed to complete most of the required five sections, which comprise volunteering, physical, skills, expedition and residential challenges.

As pupils are welcomed back to school across Wiltshire this week, we spoke to a few of the schools. Deputy head teacher at Clarendon Academy in Trowbridge, David Cade said this week was about a phased return to in-class learning. Monday and Tuesday this week were occupied with giving pupils the first of three lateral flow tests. On Wednesday morning, pupils at Clarendon College returned to classrooms following two days of lateral flow testing at the school.
