Hwy 1 will be fully open east of Golden for the May long weekend

Hwy 1 will be fully open east of Golden for the May long weekend Between April 12 and May 14, the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) was fully closed east of Golden due to major construction on Phase 4 of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project. During that time, anyone driving between Golden and the BC-Alberta border has been forced to detour through Radium Hot Springs via Hwy 93S and Hwy 95, adding 90 minutes of travel time. This past weekend, the highway fully reopened to traffic for the first time since construction began, but has since closed again for weekday construction. It will be fully open to traffic once again for the May long weekend, starting at noon on Friday until noon on Tuesday, May 25.

Trans-Canada to be open on long weekend | Columbia Valley, Radium

Posted: May 19, 2021 Trans-Canada to be open on long weekend The Trans-Canada Highway will be open for passage during the Victoria Day long weekend, significantly reducing the traffic volumes on Highway 93 through Kootenay National Park and Highway 95 between Radium Hot Springs and Golden. In a Kicking Horse Canyon traffic update, the Ministry of Transportation and Highways today released an updated schedule for highway openings and closures due to the work ongoing on Highway 1 from Golden Donald Upper Road to Yoho Bridge (four km east of Golden). Major construction is underway to four-lane that traditionally dangerous stretch of highway. Here’s a schedule of what is happening until the end of the month in terms of highway activity.

May 14, 2021 - 12:00 PM Motorists driving to and from Alberta on the Trans-Canada Highway will be able to use the Golden to Field portion currently closed for construction and avoid the 1.5 hour delay, at least for the next two weekends. The construction project is upgrading 4.8 kilometres of highway through the most challenging sections of the Kicking Horse Canyon at a cost of $601 million, cost shared with the federal government. It is the fourth and final phase of Highway 1 reconstruction through the canyon. A full closure will resume Monday, May 17 at 7:30 a.m. until noon on Friday, May 21. There will be no closures during the May long weekend between May 22 and 24, with a full closure back in effect on May 25 at noon.
