Insight. Sports is an integral part of a nation’s culture. Apart from the obvious employment opportunities, it is a great uniter of people. However, the industry in Uganda is still far from reaching its potential.

The Ugandan sports industry is badly in need of a boost. The relentless underwhelming performance in regional tournaments is a clear indication of an industry in limbo.
Once in a while, a lone star makes it on the world stage think -Halima Nakayi, Dorcus Inzikuru, Stephen Kiprotich and Joshua Cheptegei, only to remind us of what we can be and what potential we have.

Fire on Tuesday morning burnt Grace House, one of the girls’ dormitory at King’s College Budo in Wakiso District

A dormitory for female students caught fire on Tuesday at around 6:40am as the students were away for preps. Students’ property was burnt before police extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to other buildings. No one was injured.

Investigations into suspected arson at King’s College Budo have widened after detectives obtained information that there was discontent among students following expulsion of their colleagues for indiscipline.

Fire guts girls dormitory at King s College Budo

Fire has gutted a girl s dormitory at King’s College Budo in Wakiso district.
Eddie Ssewaje, the LC I chairperson of Nagalabi village and an eyewitness, says the fire started from the two-storied Grace House dormitory which hosts senior one and three students around 6:30 am this morning.
“We saw smoke coming out and we rushed to find out what was happening. We found the building burning. It was so frightening,” said Ssewaje.
Adding that the incident invoked the memories of April 2008 when fire gutted the neighbouring Budo Junior school leaving 19 pupils dead.
Timber growers association wants everyone to plant trees

Uganda Timber Growers Association (UTGA), an organisation of commercial tree growers, has embarked on a campaign to see everyone plants trees.
This was stated by Solomon Osewe Oketcho after his appointment as UTGA’s new board chairman for 2021 to 2023; the appointment is renewable. Oketcho was elected by the annual general meeting of the assembly sitting at Silver Springs hotel, Bugolobi on March 18, 2021; he replaces Dr Kiremire Noreda Bashabe.
Oketcho is also a board member of the Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda (DPF) and an executive director for Strategy and Risk Management at Bank of Uganda.

Four years ago, on February 22, a bright light in our family was extinguished. I remember vividly arriving at Lacor hospital in Gulu at 1.30pm to visit my father, Lapwony Michael Ocan who had been admitted for a few days for what was suspected to be a heart condition. His state did not seem worrying.
