One of the Tweed Shire’s oldest residents’ associations is celebrating a long-awaited return to the Kingscliff Community Hall.
‘This is our spiritual home,’ said Peter Newton, President of the Kingscliff Ratepayers and Progress Association (KRPA).
‘Our Association, which has been around in one form or another since 1933, has played a significant part in developing the infrastructure of our wonderful area, including the creation of this iconic building which benefits the whole community,’ said Mr Newton.
The Kingscliff Community Hall was originally built by means of a special rate variation, suggested and championed by KRPA, with each Kingscliff ratepayer contributing one shilling extra on their rates to facilitate design and construction.

The debate over the movement of fill via the Tweed Coast Road and through Kingscliff to fill future development sites has been considered by residents, Tweed Shire Councillors, and staff at the last two planning meetings and a workshop in between.
Councillors Warren Polglase (Conservative) and Pryce Allsop (Conservative) have both been pushing hard for the development application DA20/0965 to allow free fill from the M1 roadworks to be trucked in to be used as fill by Gales Holdings. This would be used for filling land on and around Turnock Street and would replace the Land and Environment Court (L&EC) approval for bringing fill from their existing local quarry site. The DA seeks truck and dog movements every two minutes for six and a half days per week for a minimum of 28 weeks to bring in the fill.

Today in Mullumbimby I witnessed a woman blowing bubbles on people. She was walking with her dog and blowing bubbles over passers-by. What is usually the magical work of the fairy tribe, today it had a kind of aggression. The bubbles weren’t by accident. This was a ‘Fuck You’ to mask wearing. A fuck you to people wearing masks. A fuck you to the existence of this coronavirus.

Thirteen courts cases since the 2000s and residents of Kingscliff and Tweed Shire Council accept that there is going to be significant disruption to their lives and amenity during the fill and developments of the residential developments at Chinderah. However, it is the severity of the impact of these activities on the community that was up for debate at Tweed Council’s planning meeting last Thursday.
There are predicted to be 32 trucks an hour for 44 weeks for development applications (DA) 20/0860 and 32 trucks per hour for 28 weeks for DA20/0965 if permission is given to bring in fill from the M1 for the sites.
