AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE:AGR) confirmed today that the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has issued the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for Vineyard Wind 1. The issuance of the FEIS is the final step before a Record of Decision (ROD) from BOEM, the last approval required for construction on the project to begin. The project is under development by Vineyard Wind, a joint venture between Avangrid Renewables, a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc., and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

The Outer Banks have long been known for how hard the wind can blow think the Wright brothers in Kitty Hawk. Now, 27 miles out to sea from the site of that first flight, there’s a proposal for an offshore wind farm that could eventually be big enough to generate 2,500 megawatts.

A wind farm set for construction off North Carolina s Outer Banks would create nearly 200 full-time jobs in the Tarheel State and Virginia following its completion.
An economic study by alternative energy developer Avangrid Renewables calculated the project would add $2 billion to the region s economy over the next 10 years.
Construction of the Kitty Hawk Offshore Wind Project is set to begin in 2024 in an area roughly 27 mi. offshore from Corolla, N.C., covering 122,405 acres. The work s completion is expected to be in 2030.
When all phases are complete, the wind farm is expected to have a generation capacity of 2.5 gigawatts, enough to power 700,000 homes, the report said.

Avangrid Inc. has submitted plans to the Interior Department for the first offshore wind project off the coast of North Carolina, pushing the industry south into hurricane-prone waters.
The first phase of the Kitty Hawk offshore wind project would produce 800 megawatts of power from turbines sited 27 miles off of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, a tourist hub. Avangrid, an energy holding company based in Connecticut, is aiming to build as much as 2,500 MW in the lease area between 2021 and 2030. That would be enough electricity to light up 700,000 homes.
