Plant blossoms to brighten the park

Imagine groups of these in Commonwealth Park. “We’ve had all the pleasure of the massed flower displays of Floriade over 20-odd years, but no blossom trees in spring to compliment this show,” laments gardening columnist CEDRIC BRYANT. I’M often asked what my favourite tree or shrub is. My standard answer is “the one I’m looking at”. Cedric Bryant. However, I have a special affinity for blossom trees. In the early days of this city, there were many more blossom trees planted than today, especially in the older suburbs. For example, look at Flinders Way, Griffith, compared with most of Belconnen, where eucalypts dominate the streetscapes.

Climate protestor goes on hunger strike in prison

Extinction Rebellion protestors at Commonwealth Avenue. ONE of the protestors that stood on the roof of one of two trucks that blocked Commonwealth Avenue and Kings Avenue for seven hours yesterday (May 12) has refused to sign her bail conditions.  The activists, who were protesting in response to the lack of seriousness taken around climate change in the federal budget that was handed down on Tuesday night, were removed from the trucks by a specialist police team. Six of them faced the ACT Magistrates Court today. Three of the activists pled guilty to the charges and accepted fines ranging from $400 to $600, two accepted further bail conditions banning them from approaching Parliament House until a hearing on June 10, and one of them, Violet Coco, refused to sign the bail conditions.

Jacksonville couple says SUV was attacked by group on minibikes Group tied to large motorcycle meetup Published:  Updated:  Tags:  They say their SUV was attacked. They shared photos of dozens of motorcyclists they said bombarded their SUV at the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Kings Avenue in San Marco on Saturday around 3:45 p.m. Grant and Alexandra Taylor said they were visiting her parents when they saw the group blocking traffic. Moments later, they were caught in a confrontation with the bikers. “As soon as I started moving, all of the bikes started flooding toward us and immediately started surrounding our car as if they weren’t happy that I was going with the light,” Grant Taylor said. “And then they proceeded to start kicking and punching and beating our vehicle. They were using their helmets, one of them actually tried to lift his bike up and rev it into the vehicle.”
