The Times-Delta analysis utilized satellite photos and modeling from prior fires to determine that between 10% and 14% of the world s adult giant sequoia population was wiped off. I can t express how incredible this is for all of us. These trees have been there for millennia. They ve previously been through scores of wildfires. The Associated Press spoke with Christy Brigham, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks chief of resources management and science.

Forest officials stated that the destruction of the trees will have a long-term negative influence on the ecosystem. Redwoods are among the most effective natural carbon dioxide scrubbers in the world, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The Old Globe theater in San Diego’s Balboa Park will resume outdoor presentations Friday, with full-scale indoor productions to follow in fall.

Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum, an open-air venue in Topanga Canyon, will present a summer season of three plays July 10 through Nov. 7, including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Julius Caesar.” Ticket sales began June 1. The venue is also presenting an afternoon concert by singer-songwriter Inara George on June 6.

A Memorial Day hike ended in tragedy when a man lost his balance and plummeted 500 feet to his death off the summit ridge of a mountain and a woman who tried to grab him as he was falling was severely injured after tumbling 30 feet in her rescue attempt.
