When last we left off with You Are My Spring psychiatrist Yeong-do had given an unsettling warning to leading lady Da-jeong about the ever persistent Joon, and likewise told Joon to leave her alone. Right away the action picks up with an unsettling flashback giving some credence to Yeong-do s warning beyond mere jealousy. But by the time we get to the end of the episode and have this better contextualized, Yeong-do s reasoning still isn t all that convincing.

More of a point is made on Yeong-do being a clinical expert in the study of psychopaths and sociopaths. He quite literally wrote a book on the subject. We also see him quickly catch on to the exact source of some fairly self-evidently preposterous lies from a patient. There s no real reason to mistrust Yeong-do, except for the fact that he shows similar symptoms of detachment that Joon does, and might seem comparably dangerous. Except that Yeong-do doesn t really want to do anything.

Prior to its premiere I could never quite understand what this You Are My Spring was actually about. The marketing has been simultaneously moody and vague. But appropriately enough, the story itself is deliberately vague. The extended opening clearly establishes that Da-jeong (played by
Seo Hyun-jin) has distorted ideas about human relationships due to an unfortunate childhood and has no idea what to think about men in the present day.

There s a very unsettling quality in
Seo Hyun-jin s performance that really nails this. On one end, she repeatedly refers to Joon (played by
Yoon Park) as her stalker. On the other end, Da-jeong s personality is so aggressively avoidant it s hard to imagine anyone aside from a borderline stalker being able to get close to her. That Joon himself makes reference to this paradox is especially frustrating. His very awareness of this philosophical conundrum suggests that he has a manipulative attitude toward human natur
