A special school board meeting on Tuesday saw members approve the elimination of an assistant superintendent position, the reduction from 16 to 12 of the number of director-level salaried positions in the central office, a restructuring of the entire Curriculum & Instruction and Student Services Department and a shift of several district-based positions to school-based positions The board also agreed to the use of grant funding to pay for school-based positions. “Just as our board is taking on the difficult task of school reorganization, so too must we streamline staffing in our central services,” Superintendent Alisa McLean said, alluding to the ongoing discussion of another round of school consolidation. “These changes will also eliminate our reliance on state and local dollars. 13 hrs ago OXFORD — The city of Oxford has begun its search for a new police chief with Alvin Coley set to retire from the position on Aug. 1. Coley has enjoyed building relationships with Oxford’s residents and leaders since taking over the police chief position in 2013 but he said that he is ready to start a new chapter in his life following a distinguished career in law enforcement. “I’ve spent 34 years and 10 months in law enforcement, so it’s just time,” Coley said. “I want to spend some time with my family. After doing this for so long, I need to venture down some other avenues and kick back and relax a little bit.”

The changes take effect July 1, and officials hope they streamline the way they support their schools. “I believe that the reassignments are going to [position] us now that we’re going to be back [teaching] face-to-face,” said board Chairman David Richardson. “As we embark on our mantra of a new day, [that] new leadership and those reassignments are just kind of making sure everyone’s on the right seat on the bus. First, the board named Stan Winborne, now the assistant superintendent for operations and human resources, to the position of associate superintendent of curriculum, instruction and student services. Winborne has served nearly 25 years with the district, and as head of curriculum and instruction will replace Michael Myrick, who’s leaving to become superintendent of the Weldon City Schools.
