Business Insider reports the Federal Communications Commission has awarded Musk’s company SpaceX with more than $885 million in federal subsidies for its satellite internet broadcast system known as Starlink. $20 million of it will be spent in New York state over the next 10 years, serving more than 13,000 potential customers.

The FCC has awarded $886 million to SpaceX for high-speed internet

Image: SpaceX The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) just awarded $886 million to Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring high-speed internet to 642,925 rural locations, spread across 35 US states. The funding was available through the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. In total, $9.2 billion was awarded to companies. The $9.2 billion auction is just the first phase of the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund program. During this auction, $9.2 billion was awarded to 180 companies. Out of all companies, only Rural Electric Cooperate Consortium ($1.1 billion), LTD Broadband ($1.32 billion), and Charter ($1.22 billion) were awarded more funds than Elon Musk’s SpaceX. But then again, those are all traditional wireline internet providers, whereas SpaceX was the only satellite broadband provider that got funds from this auction. According to the terms of the auction, the selected companies will need to provide broadband internet with a 100 megabit download and up to 20 megabit

RDOF auction results already raising questions

The ink is just beginning to dry on the FCC s initial $9.2 billion Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) auction, but some in the telecom industry are already raising questions about the entities receiving funds, what they plan to spend it on, and whether they might be able to effectively cross the digital divide. Confusion and corruption may just be beginning, wrote Christopher Mitchell, director of the Community Broadband Networks Initiative with the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), on the group s MuniNetworks website. Mitchell raised a number of questions about how some of the auction s biggest winners might effectively deploy a range of telecom technologies in rural areas.
