Booker, Gillibrand, Spanberger reintroduce climate bill

-The Hagstrom Report Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., on Monday reintroduced the Climate Stewardship Act, a climate change bill focused on voluntary farm and ranch conservation practices, massive reforestation, and wetlands restoration. Booker and Gillibrand are both members of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Spanberger is a member of the House Agriculture Committee. Inspired by President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, the Climate Stewardship Act would support voluntary climate stewardship practices on more than 100 million acres of farmland, plant billions of trees to revive deforested landscapes and expand urban tree cover, and reestablish the Civilian Conservation Corps one of the New Deal’s most popular programs, Booker said in a news release.

Answer Line: Electric co-ops can enter competitive market

Longview News-Journal QUESTION: I saw the February story in the News-Journal about how ongoing electric regulation in this area helped prevent the electricity disaster that occurred in much of the rest of the unregulated portions of the state, where people can choose their electric provider. The story focused on SWEPCO and how competition has been delayed here for years because the company s prices couldn t be beat. I was curious - how do electric cooperatives factor into that picture in our area? ANSWER: So, it would have been helpful if I had explained all of this in that original story, and I apologize for that.

The plan calls for investing $100 billion to ensure everyone in America has access to high-speed broadband infrastructure. In a White House fact sheet outlining the American Jobs Plan, the Biden administration recalls the national effort to bring affordable access to electricity to all through the Rural Electrification Act of 1936. In 1936, nearly 90 percent of farms lacked electric power becau

Vermont Considers Giving Communities More Say in Building Out Broadband

Tim Newcomb Internet service was agonizingly slow when Ed and Elizabeth Childs moved into their rural Corinth home in 2012. Nearly a decade later, it s not much better. The couple pays $75 a month for DSL service over the copper wires of their local telephone company, but it s useless for many modern tasks. Any kind of teleconferencing or uploading files is a real problem, Ed said. To upload video, even in a compressed format, you re talking hours and hours  even days. So Ed, a retired electrical engineer, did two things. He joined the Space on Main in nearby Bradford, a coworking space where he has the high-speed internet connection he needs to develop a new business venture. And he joined the governing board of the East Central Vermont Telecommunications District, better known as ECFiber.
