GILGIT-BALTISTAN An American hunter has created a record by hunting Markhor, Pakistan’s national animal, with an arrow. Joseph Bradford paid $80,000 to hunt down the wild goat, known to have beautiful coiled horns, at Tooshi-Shasha Conservancy in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
“This is the first time that trophy hunting was performed with an arrow,” said Dr. Mohsin Farooq, Chief Conservator Wildlife Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “Bradford had to position himself as close to the markhor as possible as he was using a bow to hunt. He succeeded in killing the markhor, which had 40-inch horns, on the second attempt on the sixth day of his expedition.”

THE only veterinary hospital of the city was swarmed by young people from a nearby village. Tears could be seen in the eyes of most of them; they had just rescued a Kashmir markhor of about four years that had been trapped on a steep cliff, at considerable risk to their own lives. During the rescue operation, the markhor had sustained injures and had been rushed to hospital, while the villagers had gathered there out of concern for the animal’s health.
Such a high degree of their attachment to the animal’s welfare and zeal for conservation of wildlife can only be attributed to the provision of markhors’ trophy hunting, which brings them a heavy dividend in the shape of permit fee. APDP, JKCCS document torture In Kashmir

Srinagar: Prisoners in Jammu and Kashmir have been subjected to abuse and torture, including “water-boarding, sleep deprivation and sexualised torture”, according to a report by two rights bodies.
The 560-page report released on Monday mentions solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, and sexualised torture including rape and sodomy, used as torture techniques against Kashmiris.
Other torture methods included electrocution, hanging from a ceiling, dunking detainees’ head in water (which is sometimes mixed with chili powder), said the report by Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) and Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS).
