The Venture Taranaki initiative Branching Out is a collaborative exercise to investigate, explore, package, and potentially pilot new commercial opportunities that could add sustainable value to Taranaki’s economy and help the region’s food and fibre sector become more diverse, resilient, innovative and in-demand.
Through the initiative 10-12 high-potential ventures will be identified and analysed for their feasibility.

Scentian Bio spins out from Plant & Food Research
with investment from Sprout
Unravelling the mystery of
how insects smell led to a ground-breaking discovery - a
panel of synthesized insect receptors could be used to
create a device to smell and taste chemical compounds.
Scentian Bio was formed to create a novel technology for
commercial use in medical, food or industrial
settings.
Dr Andrew Kralicek, spent the past 19 years
at Plant & Food Research determining how smell receptors
in insects work. These receptors are the result of 400
million years of evolution and enable insects to easily find
mates, detect predators, find food, or where to lay eggs
The Eyrewell Forest area is thought to have originally been kānuka shrubland and converted to a regularly-felled pine plantation in 1928. It was returned to Ngāi Tahu – the original landowners – in 2000. In 2016, it was announced the forest would be converted to 8500 hectares of irrigated pasture, supporting 14,000 dairy cows across 20 farms. Tree felling was completed by 2018. Lincoln University researchers have been carrying out surveys of the leftover forest since 2013, with work ending last year. They were unable to find a single Eyrewell beetle. Ecology professor Nicholas Dickinson has been involved in the beetle hunt since its early days. “It probably is too early to write the obituary for something we’re not sure we ever had.”
