Cuts in programs at Greensburg Salem School District are one of the focal points of a primary campaign where three incumbents and five challengers are battling for four school board seats.
Running are incumbents Lynn Jobe, Jeffrey Metrosky and Lynna Thomas along with Sara Deegan, Desmond Grace, Autumn Jevicky, Emily Miller and Heather Shearer. All have cross-filed and will appear on both Democratic and Republican ballots Tuesday.
Ronald Mellinger Jr., board president, is not seeking another term.

Greensburg Salem School District is partnering with Hayden’s Pharmacy to offer a Pfizer covid-19 vaccine clinic for students age 16 or older.
The voluntary clinic will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Greensburg Salem Senior High School, according to the district website.
School officials noted district parents will determine whether their eligible children receive the vaccine.
For those planning to participate, advance registration is required through the pharmacy website at haydenspharmacy.com/covid-19-vaccine.

The covid-19 pandemic made the 2020-21 school year challenging for the Greensburg Salem School District, though not necessarily for the bottom line.
A forecast of the 2020-21 budget, presented this week to the school board, shows a potential operating surplus of about $1 million and a fund balance of more than $5.2 million, which represents more than 11% of the budget total.

When Thomas Shea had to quarantine in October, he never stopped teaching. From his home, he continued giving and recording lessons for his 10th-grade social studies students at Kiski Area High School.
Shea said about two-thirds of his students are still learning from home, though the school district offers up to four days of in-person instruction. A co-teacher watched the students in his classroom, Shea said, but he still carried out his lessons from afar, with students following along on their Chromebooks.
