Pressure is mounting on the UK to stop sending waste and recycling abroad for processing
Reports suggests Turkish government will follow in the steps on China and impose a moratorium on imports of British plastic waste
Turkey is set to ban imports of most plastic waste following a Greenpeace investigation that exposed mountains of British recycling being illegally dumped and burned on beaches and roadsides in the country.
About 40 per cent of the UK s plastic waste was sent to Turkey last year, according to the Trashed report. UK exports increased from 12,000 tonnes in 2016 to 209,642 tonnes in 2020, accounting for almost 30 per cent of the UK s plastic waste exports. The increase is partly down to China - previously a key destination for UK plastic waste exports - banning many plastic imports in 2017.
