Doubles down on emissions
This week Biden fulfilled a campaign promise in convening a “global climate summit” within his first 100 days in office. The two-day virtual meeting, attended by the leaders of a number of US allies and two of its adversaries China and Russia appears like many of these gatherings to be mostly a talking shop.
But a decision on Thursday is substantive, and therefore bears examination. The president committed the US to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 52% below its 2005 emissions levels by 2030, without revealing any details as to how this would be achieved.
The announcement also brings GHG reduction targets 20 years forward from what is set out in Biden’s $2.3 trillion infrastructure/ clean energy proposal unveiled in March. That plan commits to net-zero emissions by 2050 (net-zero refers to balancing the amount of emitted greenhouse gases with the equivalent emissions that are either offset or sequestered).

Governor Newsom’s announcement banning new fracking permits starting in 2024 and analyzing pathways for a phase out of oil extraction is not enough to address the urgent climate and public health crises facing Californians
Sacramento, California Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a ban on new hydraulic fracturing permits starting in 2024. Additionally, the governor requested that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) explore avenues to phase out fossil fuel extraction in the state by no later than 2045 an almost 25 year timeline to take the action that science tells us we need urgently in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. These announcements follow the governor’s September Executive Order calling on the California state legislature to ban fracking, as well as last week’s failed vote on SB 467, which proposed a timeline for phasing out fracking and other extreme drilling techniques.

A northern giant petrel, or pāngurunguru, found with plastic chunks in its stomach, has been released after a month recovering at the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital.
OPINION: I stared down at my shopping trolley with a familiar guilt. Despite trying not to, every second item I had chosen had some form of plastic as part of its packaging: plastic containers for almost all dairy, plastic liners for cereals and frozen foods, plastic boxes for berries and more delicate fruit. I know, I know. I’m supposed to reduce plastic waste and support local businesses by using my local butcher, produce shop, and the bulk food store to refill my own containers. Some weeks I do. But this time, I was lucky just to cram in a frantic shop at Pak ‘n Save between work meetings.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday announced he has taken action to end the state s issuing of new permits for fracking by 2024.
Newsom directed the state s Department of Conservation s Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) to take regulatory action to stop issuing new permits for hydraulic fracturing also known as fracking by January 2024 and also asked the California Air Resources Board to look into ways to phase out oil extraction across the state by 2045.
Newsom last September issued an executive order calling for an end to fracking and to accelerate the state s transition away from fossil fuels.
