Biden Urged to Sign Climate Emergency Executive Order
WASHINGTON More than 380 groups today called on President-elect Joe Biden to sign an executive order to confront the climate emergency with the full power of the executive branch as soon as he takes office.
The groups presented Biden with a draft executive order with a suite of actions the president can take under existing law to phase out fossil fuels, protect workers and communities and “build back better” to a just, clean-energy economy.

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to be the next secretary of energy, two sources familiar with transition discussions tells NPR.

Granholm will bring experience in promoting clean-energy manufacturing as Biden tries to implement a sweeping $2 trillion climate plan.
The selection was first reported by Politico.
Granholm has been Michigan s attorney general and served two terms as governor until 2011. She was also an energy advisor to Hillary Clinton and is an adjunct professor at the University of California Berkeley law school.

500 Groups Urge Biden to Order Fossil Fuel Leasing Ban
Proposed Executive Order Could Be Implemented Immediately by New Interior Secretary
WASHINGTON Hundreds of conservation, Native American, religious and business groups today sent President-elect Joe Biden text for a proposed executive order to ban new fossil fuel leasing and permitting on federal public lands and waters.
Biden promised during the campaign that he would stop new leasing and permitting activities on his first day in office. The executive order highlighted in today’s letter from 574 organizations outlines the steps needed for the next Interior Secretary to implement the president’s directive.

After more than a decade of work intended to rid palm oil supply chains of deforestation, the results don’t match the effort.
Deforestation has increased, despite more monitoring, more certifications, more on-the-ground cooperation and the availability of palm oil certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil for 12 years.
Global land cover decreased from 2000 to 2015, according to The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Report for 2019. Forest area as a share of total land is still declining, but the rate of decline is slowing, according to the UN. Indonesia, the top global palm oil producer, experienced the third-most forest loss in the world in 2019, according to the World Resources Institute though it does represent an improvement from previous years.
