Greek authorities on Wednesday warned that the country’s lockdown restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) may be toughened further due to the recent spike in single-day confirmed infections.
The Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY) on Wednesday reported a total of 1,151 new Covid-19 cases in Greece and 27 deaths. Most cases (612) were recorded in Attica, which is currently in “red” status.
Data showed that coronavirus infections in Attica alone have increased by 77.9 percent, with active cases in the region now at 3,791 and most cases (1,040, up by 67 percent) found in the
center of Athens.

Autoritățile au confirmat marți 2.676 de cazuri de infectare cu coronavirus în ultimele 24 de ore, după efectuarea a 30.467 de teste. Numărul deceselor a fost unul ridicat în ultima zi - 111 persoane infectate au murit. În schimb, numărul pacienților internați la ATI rămâne sub 1.000, mai exact - 967.
Grupul de Comunicare Strategică a anunțat marți 2.676 de cazuri de infectare cu coronavirus, după efectuarea a 30.467 de teste.
Concret, în ultimele 24 de ore au fost efectuate 23.287 de teste RT-PCR (14.755 în baza definiției de caz și a protocolului medical și 8.532 la cerere) și 7.180 de teste rapide antigenice.
Greek infectious disease expert,
Nikos Sypsas, on Wednesday warned that emergency measures may have to be imposed on Attica due to the recent rise of coronavirus (Covid-19) infections in the region.
“The active cases in Attica are many,” Sipsas said to
Skai TV, adding that the problem has spread from the region’s central sector to the northern, eastern and western sectors as well.
His comments came after the National Organization for Public Health (EODY) announced 858 new coronavirus cases and 32 deaths in Greece. Most of the announced infections (409) were reported in the greater Athens area.
In total, according to EODY figures, at the moment in Greece there are 5,324 active cases, of which 2,374 are in Attica.

Greece’s first vaccinations against the coronavirus (Covid-19) were performed in reference hospitals of Attica on Sunday, in accordance with the Greek government’s vaccination operation dubbed
“Eleftheria”.
The country’s vaccinations were in line with the EU Vaccination Days, which sees the first Europeans being vaccinated on the same days (December 27, 28 and 29).

Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday tweeted:
“Today the first Europeans are getting vaccinated against COVID-19. I’m touched to see people taking the vaccine everywhere across the EU. From Madrid to Paris, Athens to Riga. First we protect the more vulnerable. Soon we’ll have enough doses for all of us.”
