UGA celebrates Women’s History Month February 26, 2021 Deborah Scott (Submitted photo) This year’s Women’s History Month keynote address will be presented by Deborah Scott, executive director of Georgia STAND-UP, a “think and act tank” that supports community economic development through advocacy for community benefits, project work agreements and other policies that increase equity and access to opportunity. A graduate of Clark Atlanta University, Scott is an accomplished advocate of universal voting rights, economic inclusion and progressive civic engagement as well as a master organizer, strategist and highly skilled trainer. In 2012, she was recognized by the White House as a Champion of Change.

Grady faculty member wants to change people’s lives February 19, 2021 Amanda Bright teaches students how to work toward solutions journalism Amanda Bright has always wanted to make an impact on her community, but over the years the impact and the community have expanded. “I have always craved to have more impact,” Bright said. “I want to change people’s lives in a tangible way, and I want to do something to forward my community and not just be in my community.” It’s for this reason that Bright started out as a community journalist, pivoted to teaching community college and high school journalism classes and now teaches digital journalism at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

In honor of Black History Month, Black University of Georgia alumni Rennie Curran and Mikaya Thurmond reflected on their college experiences and how their college years contributed to career successes.

UGA 2021 spring commencement plans announced

University of Georgia graduates will get a spring commencement ceremony   but with COVID-19 modifications. UGA president Jere W. Morehead announced Friday that the university will have not one, but four ceremonies for the spring 2021 graduates, including three undergraduate ceremonies and one ceremony for the master’s, specialists, and doctoral degrees. The decision to split up commencement into multiple days would be to comply with social distancing guidelines. Additionally, this year s graduates will sit in the stands with their guests, and there will not be a formal processional. The commencement speaker has yet to be announced.  For the undergraduates, commencement will begin on May 13 and end on May 15, taking place in Sanford Stadium.
